M1840 Ames 'wristbreaker' dated 1848 in seen the elephant condition. The blade has a dull gunmetal gray tone with minimal to no pitting whatsoever. The ricasso has a nice 'NP Ames / Cabotville / 1848' and on the reverse 'US / WD'. The leather wrap and wire are missing. Brass guard has a mellow tone throughout.

The scabbard is the correct one for this style of sword and does have a chocolate brown patina throughout. You'll notice that there is evenly light pitting throughout. A look at the bottom of the scabbard shows a missing drag. Otherwise an iconic sword from the Mexican & Civil War era.
