Here is a really cool 3-inch Confederate Read Shell recovered years ago from the Snyder's Bluff area, where most of this type of specimen is known to come from. It has been nicely cleaned and coated. As you can see the sabot has been thrown and it has been fired as the iron has shaved off as a result of the sabot pressing up into the iron causing this to occur. A commonly seen thing in fired Reads. This one will still stand up right. This shell would have been fired from a 3-inch Ordnance Rifle.
