M1840 Non-Commissioned Officer's Sword - Ames
Item #: FDR19-114
M1840 NCO Sword by Ames Mfg dated 1864. Blade measures 32inches long and had a nice clean tone throughout. There are a spots where there is some modeling, but not pitting noted. The Ames scroll is seen on one side of the ricasso, with US/ADK/ and a lightly stamped 1864. The leather washer is present. The handle has a nice reddish-brass tone.
The leather scabbard fits the sword nicely. It has the proper leather scabbard, but the drag is marked "G.W.C." which was an inspector, along with several others, including A.D.K.,when this sword was produced. There does appear to be a repair just above the drag, which is not uncommon with these leather scabbards. Nonetheless, the patina of the brass fittings on the scabbard match the handle of the sword very nicely.
