A super cool M1841 US Naval Cutlass with scabbard by Ames Mfg Company. The blade has a nice gun metal gray tone throughout. One edge of the blade has several flea bites down the blade while the other side is for the most part smooth. You can see near the guard on one side, "U.S.N. / 1842" and on the other, very faint is the "N.P. Ames / Cabotsville" mark, though the 'MASS' is still easily seen. Based on the date, we know this is one of the first 3,000 that were delivered to the Government; (500) March'42; (1,000) May'42; (1,500) Late'42. The brass guard has a nice dark mellow patina throughout, which along with the fish scale handle, the eagle motif on the pommel, and the nice wide guard, makes for a very impressive piece. On the guard you can see various alphanumeric stamps which are most likely rack numbers. "27" next to the blade on the guard, with the larger "2 b" & "3".

The leather scabbard is present and is in good condition. There are no markings noted. The brass throat and drag are present and matches the sword handle and guard perfectly. The throat still retains the stud which would have attached it to the baldric that would have been worn with the sword. This is an attractive sword that would enhance any display!
