Veteran Shield Badge of the 48th Wisconsin Infantry, Company E. The badge has a nice Finish. This beautiful badge still retains the stick pin on the top rung.

The 48th Wisconsin was organized at Milwaukee, Wis and mustered into Federal service in February and March 1865. It was organized under the supervision of Lt. Colonel Henry B. Shears, Colonel Uri B. Pearsall being at the time in service as lieutenant colonel of a colored regiment.

The regiment was mustered out on March 24, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

The companies were assigned to provost duty and protecting the frontier from guerrillas. Company E, specifically, was initially stationed at Fort Scott, Kansas, with Companies A, B, and D. Later, around September 1865, Company E was moved to Fort Zarah, Kansas, for garrison duty.
